FAQ
New Welding Process
- What is Feathercraft Sealskin?
- Sealskin is the term we use for our new welding technology of our kayak skins. A urethane deck is welded to a urethane hull making it water-tight -- a totally sealed skin kayak.
- What is RF welding?
RF is radio frequency power that is applied for a period of time to join polyurethane fabrics. The fabrics are held under pressure, coating to coating, with conductor dies. During this process, the molecules of the polyurethane are jiggled and bonded into one homogeneous weld.
- What is Continuous Process Welding?
With state of the art machinery, heat is applied to two urethane fabric surfaces as they are pulled through rollers, bonding the fabrics together. Temperature, speed and pressure are computer controlled.
- Why did Feathercraft change from the fabrics they were using?
- Right from the start, it has been our goal to use the best materials that we could find, and keep the cost manageable. As all things change with technology, better materials and processes have been developed.
- Hypalon boats......are they still okay?
- Hypalon is great!
What was not so great was the toxic job required to make each hull. We wanted to get away from this toxic process. Hypalon is incredibly tough and strong, but it can't be welded. It also happens to be heavier in weight than urethane.
- Why is Feathercraft the only one welding their kayak skins?
- We have always believed in making the best folding kayak. We have now made a huge investment in this belief, and in the machines and technology it takes to make our boats even better.
